Mission CISD offering parent conference on drug awareness

Mission, Texas- Mission CISD (Consolidated Independent School District) officials have announced an upcoming parent conference focusing on drug awareness. The event is open to any parents. The conference will be held at Veterans Memorial High School, on Saturday, April 30, 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Registration with a light breakfast will begin at 8:00 a.m. Sessions will start at 9:00 a.m. Sessions will be held for both English and Spanish speaking audiences.

Participants will attend three different sessions. One will provide information about the latest trends in drugs that parents should know about. A second session is designed to give parents information about the signs and symptoms of possible drug usage and how to communicate with their children about topics like drugs and alcohol. A third session will focus on resources that are available through Mission CISD and the community.

“We have worked with local law enforcement and various agencies on providing information about drugs and alcohol for years,” explained Cynthia Wilson, executive director for secondary education. “However, this is the first formal district-wide parent conference we have planned to not just warn parents about what is out there, but to arm them with information, and the resources that are available to their families.”

Wilson said this is the first of what will likely be many parent conferences planned by the district’s new United In Safety Task Force and United In Safety initiative. “As the name of the task force suggests, the district will be working towards raising the awareness of many safety related topics and issues,” Wilson said. “We are still in the very early stages of our work. However, we are planning on how to address the many topics involved throughout the months to come, and especially as we go through the next school year.”

Wilson said Mission CISD officials will continue to work with area organizations and the communities of Mission CISD as partners and resources in this effort. “Hopefully this will not only help keep our schools a safe and healthy places to learn, but will also help our families and communities.”
